Being a EMT/firefighter doesn't really take all that much skill though. Step away from what you do/want to do and look at it.
I can step away from it and look at it, believe it or not, it's more than just "put the wet stuff on the red stuff and leave", you need to figure out fire flow, gpm, exposures, and constantly be thinking about what you're going to do next. Being an EMT is already pretty obvious that it's complicated, the amount of knowledge and the amount of things that are needed to be done at one time are incredible. It takes a lot of skill, more than most understand.
Now don't take this as me saying that being a professional athlete doesn't take skill, I realize that it's amazingly difficult and they have a lot of skill. But my original thought in this post was that they were overpaid for what they do.

It doesn't take all that much to do what an EMT/whatever does....you can find hundreds upon thousands of kids at any major university that can do that.
Having the skill to be a pro athlete happens no where near as often as that.
My local firedepartment, is riduclous, there is so many people out of shape and probably physically incapable of saving a life if ever they had to carry someone that weighed 150+ lbs. Thats not to say all of them are, but they have a decent number of females, who are YOUNG, the oldest is like 22? I wouldn't put my life in any of their hands, some fire equipment is pretty heavy i honestly don't think they could use it to its extent, the same goes for a few scrawny ass guys in there, and then they have the latter some VERY overweight guys.
Fast, you do realize if you were to pay EMTs/firefigters six figures let alone what football players make Taxes would either be riduclous or they wouldn't have money for a firehall or ambulances or firetrucks, Do you know how many EMT/Firefighters there are? like i previously stated there are only a few people in the world that possess the talent of professional NFL players.

You obviously have trouble looking at this situation objectively...subjectivley...whichever i need to use..
How do you figure. I realize it's astronomically difficult to become a professional athlete, there's no debating that, I also acknowledged that I can see why they make millions. I'm just simply defending some professions that the public seems to take for granted. I understand almost anybody has the ability to learn the material needed to be a firefighter, EMT, Paramedic, LEO, etc. however, it does take a special person to do the job and it is a difficult job that takes a lot of dedication (like professional sports). I am looking at the topic from all angles and I don't see how I'm having trouble looking at it objectively.
There is a HUGE labor pool that has the ability and willingness to do what a EMT/firefighter/teacher/etc do.
There is a very very very very very very very small labor pool that has just the ability to be a professional athlete. There's a huge labor pool that has that willingness to do it, but not the ability.
If you paid LEO a crapload, everyone would want to do it and you'd have less dedication to the service. A lot more criminals trying to slip in too. There would be a lot more "cop turned dirty" stories or whatever.
Yes though, I think pro athletes are overpaid. 100-300k is fine, but when it gets to be like 140 million or whatever? That's outright ridiculous
