I have an 80GB PS3. One of the earlly ones with the CHE01 model number. 4 usb ports, backwards compatibility, etc...
It works great except after three hours, it lock ups, and you can shut it down by touching the power button on the front. You let it sit, and it may play for a an hour or so if that.
I've have it since Christmas 07. I haven't opened it up or anything. I've been looking on eBay for units that just can't read the discs and swapping them out but they go for a bit over 100 bones. So I'm thinking, why not just give 150 to Sony and have them fix it, right?

I vote send it to sony, that way they fix it and if something is still wrong, you know who to yell at other than yourself. Plus, if you don't know what you are doing, you might be out of two systems.

I would try blowing a fan at the ps3 before throwing money at the problem.
So many ways to just pick that statement apart
How does blowing a fan do anything for a PS3 you pervert
What about the fan, doesn't it cost money?
So instead of throwing money at the PS3 you blow a fan? I don't get it....

It's probably dust build up in side. Take some canned air, take it outside and blow it out thouroughly. Dust/dirt is a natural insulator so if you have build up cooling is highly negated even blowing a fan won't help
I wouldn't send it to sony just yet because you may not get your unit back. Which means you won't be backwards compatible anymore or have the 4 USB ports.

it's kind of ****ty that sony would not send the same unit back to the OP, but wouldn't that kinda mean he'd be getting a new(er) one without having to pay full retail price?
try the other suggestions before you send it out to sony.
