Best friend! Valuable Book! Ruined! ARRRGH! Exclamation points!!!!!?!!!!!
So a few years back at the Turkey Rod Runs I happen across Smokey Yunicks autobiography entitled, "The Best Damn Garage In Town, My Life and Adventures" by Smokey Yunick for 25.00 in damned fine shape.
I absolutely devoured the book and found it to be a wealth of information on a myraid of subjects as diverse as the man himself was.
I loaned it to my Master ASE mech friend who was reading in on throne as time and nature permitted. He has a crazier than hell, Maine Coon cat who one day while he was working, apparently knocked it off of the bathroom counter and into the sink with a leaky faucet where it got dripped on all day. He was able to dry it out but it is now in incredibly poor shape.
He came over to the house today and showed me the book and was apologizing and blowing snot all over my shoes. He handed me a hundred dollars and asked if we could work off the balance in automotive work, ie. putting the fastbacks engine back together and getting it running. Flabbergasted that he handed me a hundred dollars, I ran in and checked out the going price
Well he said he'd work off the balance right? Sucks that you lossed such an apparently expensive and rare book, but if you get 900 dollars of work out of it, financially you are back to where you were.
I actually bought a childrens book from my younger years online. Found a pretty nice copy for $8. Some copies are going from $60-$100. Crazy what some out of prints go for. But then again, if you have the disposible income and want to reclaim a piece of your childhood...
