Default What would you do? (engine replacement)

So with my car down for a few weeks waiting for parts to arrive (cracked manifold) it made me realize my car is no spring chicken, but I am not selling it. (Can't afford any car payment)

So my obvious choice is to replace/rebuild the motor. I am leaning towards forging, and that is where my dilemma sits:

I can easily buy a used 4.6 SOHC for about a grand, and then have the motor forged. This will keep my car running until the motor is done.

Do the same, but swap the motor with the original, send original to MMR to have them forge the lower end. More labor intensive, but I know how my motor has been treated.

Buy a 4.6 DOHC out of a Mach 1, send that to be forged/rebuilt. This is the most expensive obviously (Haven't been able to find one of these for under 5k on ebay, and none locally) but should yield the best results.

What would you do? I really would like to keep the budget to a minimum, but obviously get the most for my buck. Anyone know of some salvage yards with a used 4.6 DOHC sitting around? No luck besides on ebay, and not paying their prices.

I'd probably buy a good used stock one and rock on...or....stuff a 5.4 in there just for the schits and giggles.

Why not find a Navigator's DOHC 5.4L. You can find them in running order for less than a grand. Add about $700 for a set of adaptor plates to use a Cobra intake manifold. Lengthen some harness here and there. Should be good enough to get you by while you build your engine.

Since I live in Commie land, I have to pass smog, so I am limited to either a 2v or a 4v 4.6 in the car.

Then I guess you're stuck paying about $3500 for a Mach or 99/01 Cobra 4v.

Wait, can you even do a 99/01 swap? I know some states don't allow engine swaps unless the new engine is of the same model year or newer.

has to be same year or newer. Not sure if the CARB guys would be flexible on the 03 motors even. Considering they are the same, they might be. I have no idea.

Considering there are not even using rollers anymore (no more sniffer test!) it may not matter.

Ok, next question. Have you looked into a 3v 4.6? You'd have to lock the cam phasers, but I'd imagine the 3v's are available aplenty and probably quite cheap do to said abundance.

Not yet. I have to research and see what the cost would be. I would guess that unlike a 4v, a simple tune to the stock computer won't help it run. On the plus side, way more HP out of the box, plus I can almost join the SEXX197 club.

All of this is still in planning stages. I gotta talk with my buddy/mechanic and see what he says.
