Default Airbag Not Deploying: Who to Talk To?

Some of you might know my car was totaled a few days ago. Unfortunately for me, my front airbag didn't deploy and it caused my face to impact the steering wheel hard enough to split my head open and break my nose. In the year 2014, you come to count on safety features like these to protect you in an accident, and just from people I know this is the second case of an 05-09 Mustang not deploying the airbag in a major collision.

I'm not a greedy person, and I've never filed suit for anything in my life but I wouldn't have a stack of medical bills and I wouldn't have to be taking off work right now if my car had just done what it was supposed to.

Has anyone else ever had their airbag not deploy in a serious accident? If so was there anything settled without having to get a lawyer involved? Just looking for some insight from personal experiences, thank you.

I would start with your insurance company or lawyer. An investigation will include extracting the data from the airbag control module to check for error codes and the crash data. Your insurance company, or lawyer could get the data recovered and analyzed.

Where was your impact damage? What was the speed of impact? Just because you were in an accident does not mean your airbag should have deployed. I don't know your situation - but the words "totaled" "major" and "serious" get thrown around way too much these days.

Have you ever been hit with an airbag? It is rather unpleasant. I have spent over a decade of my life in public safety and have seen many cases where airbags (correctly) did not deploy.

Also,

1) Why weren't you wearing your seat belt? You definitely do NOT want to get hit by an airbag if you aren't wearing your seatbelt. I'm assuming you weren't since your face struck the steering wheel

2) If all you got was a facial injury in a "major" or "serious" collision it sounds like you should be thanking Ford for building a car that protected you so well

3) It's not like the airbag and its components are unique to the Mustang. If there was an issue you would not be the second case; of this I am sure.

My insurance hasn't helped me at all with this scenario, I'm waiting till tomorrow to struggle with that some more.

Is this serious enough for you?

I had my seatbelt under my arm. Not proper but my ribs were just fine. I have been hit by an airbag before riding passenger in a 60 mph head on collision and I walked away unscathed, if you want to talk about unpleasant I can show you what it looks like behind my face, because that's what I saw when the safety features of the car didn't work. If my airbag had deployed I'd be fine.

Man that's a ruff hit you took, I can't believe your air bag didn't deploy from the looks of that photo. You definitely would of came out of that better if it did deploy, definitely talk with a lawyer and your insurance someone needs to give you a answer to why your airbag wouldn't deploy after a hit like that. Get well soon.

You had your safety belt under your arm and you wonder why your face hit the steering wheel? And you want others to pay for your injuries?

Airbags are SUPPLEMENTAL restraint systems, not PRIMARY.

I don't particularly like your tone. How are you going to argue that the thing shouldn't have deployed. The car felt the need to deploy the side airbag even though it was clearly a frontal collision. The airbag should have deployed, that's the bottom line; take your unconstructive hindsight somewhere else.

You don't have a case. Your injuries make it obvious that you were not properly wearing your seatbelt. If you had, then you would not be injured....air bag or not. This is very clear to me and I doubt any injury attorney will even meet with you once he/she realizes / catches on that you weren't wearing your seatbelt. If you try to be dishonest it will only end poorly for you as, again, this would not have happened if you were properly wearing your primary restraint system. Just in case you try to press this matter I have taken screen shots of this thread and will be sending them to Ford's legal team so that they have some verification that you weren't wearing your seatbelt. You were in the wrong, not Ford. The airbag had nothing to do with your injuries.

This is a corner impact and the damage is not that bad. It does not surprise me that the airbag did not deploy - based off of that picture. The fact that the side bag deployed but not the front further backs this up. It looks like that object you struck gave way a lot - which may be another reason why the bag did not deploy as your impact was not strong enough to equal ~14mph into a solid object direct on. Seriously, do some research on airbags as you clearly do not understand how they work and what their role is.

It pains me that you are trying to make others pay for your mistake.
