Default What transmisison fluid should i use?

First off want to say hi and thanks for all the great info on this forum.

I own a 2001 Mustang GT with a 5 speed manual transmision. I'm wanting to change my trans fluid and was wondering what type i should use/is recommended to use. The car is a daily drive with a round trup of 68 miles and 20/80 city and highway on the drive.

Thanks,
David

Was thinking this would be it, but want to make sure before I buy it.

Synchromesh will work for your application, but it's not the best choice. This is what will make your T-3650 shift like butter.

Amsoil Synthetic ATF

Unleashedbeast,

Thanks for the reply. For the research I've done it looks like I've got the t-45 tranny (10/00 manufacture date) would this fluid still work?

Yes, Amsoil endorses the use of their synthetic ATF for both the T-3650 and the T-45.

Nothing wrong with Amsoil, but I'd be inclined to go the local autoparts stores and pick up 3 quarts of Valvoline's Maxlife Dex/Merc ATF... Synthetic blend, and $4 dollars/quart. In my limited experience, manual transmission are not the best place for extended drains...

There is more to using a true synthetic in a transmission than simply extended drains. Shift quality using a cheap conventional compared to a true synthetic can't even be compared. It's the difference in night and day. Not to mention, when your car is cold...and you start it for the first time on a cold day, it shifts much better than a cheap conventional will, since a true synthetic thickens much less as it cools.

Most owners use the fluid in their transmission for at least 50,000 miles or greater. What fluid would you prefer for 50,000 miles or more?

In a manual tranny, I wouldn't run anything for 50K... I ran RP for 30K and shifting became noticeablly harder several thousands miles before I drained it. I figured my old transmission was just getting old, but the dino Valvoline that replaced the RP made a huge difference. Not saying RP is not up to the task, but whatever my particular conditions were, 30K was way too long on that fluid IMHO. I feel more comfortable with 15K drains on dino or synthetic blend fluids such as Maxlife... Which equates to a dollar/thousand miles in fluid cost.

Don't get me wrong, I use synthetic oils and fluids in certain applications in the car, the truck, and the ATV just not in an unfiltered, low volume manual tranny...

Even if I were changing the fluid every 10,000 miles I would prefer a True synthetic over a blend.I am worried about Performance not drain Interval.
