Hello all,

I have an 02 GT auto and I was wondering, if I was to flush the transmission and fill it with Royal Purple ATF, how many quarts would I need? I've read (5) quarts, but others say more. Help? Thanks.

If you were to drop the pan or extract the fluid, yes, you'll need 5-6 quarts on average. That method still leaves about half the fluid in there though...

I use a Mity-Vac fluid extractor for all sorts of lubricant changes, including automatic trannies. It works well.

My friend works at a shop where he would be able to extract all the fluid. Would I need 13 quarts? Sounds pricey!!!

^ Yes, it will cost some coin. Honestly, I would spend the money on a off the self ATF like Valvoline Mercon V and make sure you keep up with 30K mile (max) fluid changes. Have your buddy change the filter, too. How many miles are on it, and how long do you plan to keep it? Regular changes are the key to longevity, not high end fluid, and as long as you aren't driving in a way that is getting the ATF too hot, OTS convetional/syn. blend ATF's will do great.

Dropping the pan doesn't change the fluid in the convertor, for 100 bucks or so you can take it to a shop with a trans tech which hooks up on the oil coolers lines and removes ALL the old fluid and replaces with new.

Hey guys, I'm about to go through with it next weekend. I'm just going to go with the Mercon V oil we have at the shop. Questions: What's the new filter I need for my Auto transmission? Any word of warning beforehand and which cooler line pumps out the tranny fluid? Thanks.

alot of times with the transtech you don't need to change the filter as it will push and debris clear on the filter.

I'm afraid that's poor advice. I would drop the pan, change the filter, then back flush the system. His car is a 2002 model year car, so I doubt the filter has ever been changed before. Back flushing is not a guarantee that the filter will still be useable again.

and OP, there is no way I would have all 13 quarts back flushed with cheap ATF. You are leaving a lot of benefits on the table by not using a true synthetic ATF like Amsoil, Royal Purple, or Red Line. Your transmission would shift much smoother and provide less drive line loss. Not to mention, Amsoil ATF offers 100,000 miles ATF service life for normal conditions, 50,000 miles for severe conditions.

Did it one time, then again a few weeks later to get most of the old fluid out that was in the converter.

I just changed mine with off the shelf stuff, has never been changed with 111k miles on the clock, still bright red and smelled fine, shifts fine, etc, I think the 30k mile interval is a little early but def should not go as long as I did.
