Turbo 2.3s
Well, I just got my '80 2.3 coupe yesterday and compared to every other car I've driven it's lacking Go. Turn is okay and Stop is good, but Go definately needs some help. I realize my options for this car are fairly limited and to get a considerable increase in power my choices are basically to drop in a 5.0 or to turbocharge it. I think the turbo route would be easier, cheaper and it would keep the nice light feel of the 4 cyl. I was wondering what the differences are on the stock turbo 4 bangers. Are the pistons different, or the fuel system, electronics or anything else. Ideally I'd just be able to toss the turbo and new exhaust and intake plubing on and go, but I definately want to do it right. Or I guess I could just give up and wait until I can afford a faster car that will make it past 65 with out shaking but I don't think that would be nearly as much fun. Anyway any information and opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Some links I had bookmarked when i still had my 2.3l . I had also hoped to put a turbo on it but everyone I talked to recommended doing a complete 2.3t swap from a SVO , Merkur XR4TI , or T-Bird turbo coupe. If i hadn't found a good deal on a 5.0 donor car I would have done the 2.3t swap because I found alot of 2.3t T-Birds cheap around here. Just figured if i could do a 5.0 swapjust as cheap why get another 4 banger ? I'm sure they have their advantages but none that interested me . I just wanted power and lots of noise , so i took the 5.0

If you want to go with the turbo, don't just slap that puppy on the regular block...you'll burn holes in it. I know from experience (read my intro story, you'll cry...)

You will save yourself lots of time and money by just swapping an engine, but if you want to save the block you currently have in there, you'll want a turbo head, hardened rings, and an electronic fuel pump. The next question is, are you considering EFI? You can make do without it, but while you're building this thing, why not go all the way?
