Alright... God I feel stupid asking this... what's the bottom end?? And inversely... if there's a bottom end... is there a top end?

I'm guessing we're generally talking about the rods as people are always talking about going with forged... but it seems like that would be on the top... but maybe I'm just picture an engine upside down (man I should have taken autoshop in HS)...

Someone please do a quick Mustangs Engines for Dummies... thanks *blush*
Bottom end is everything from the heads down. Meaning your pistons, rods, crank, and the block itself along with some other things.

Anything much over 400 RWHP would need new pistons, rods, and crank.

I have seen dynos of a 400+ RWHP car with only full bolt-ons and a intercooled supercharger. (centrifugal, not a KB in other words)

Basically you are looking at 1300 or so for the bottom end, 4000+ for the supercharger, 2500 for full boltons, and if you decide to go cams 500 dollars. Plus maybe 300 for a chip and at my closest shops outragoeous prices 200 bucks for a tune.

In other words, alot of cash.

You don't need a forged crank. Get some forged pistons and rods and you'll be set.

Top end is intake manifold, cams, etc...

I would recommend picking up a few books.

Here are some of the better ones I have found:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...28740?v=glance

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...333379-6828740

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...333379-6828740

I would recommend them in that order. I would appear as though a fair amount of these books were originally written as magazines articles. But these books puts the info together into a tidy little package.

Happy Hunting.

your crank will hold at 400. a buddy of mine has forged pistins and rods with stock crank and it holds just fine. he's got a paxton centrifugal on his GT and runnin a little over 400hp and 400tq with 20,000 miles on motor. dont worry about crank as long as u dont go racin it every other day.
