Yeah, todays cats are better flowing that they were in previous years, but the aftermarket ones don't flow substantially better than stock ones. The only reason aftermarket pipes flow better as a whole, is the reduction from 4 cats to 2 and the piping itself.

There is a big misconception that you need a lot of back pressure to produce more HP. This is not the case. A car with open headers will produce more power than one with whatever exhaust you throw at it. Its just simple physics. Your engine uses a small amount of power to push the exhaust gasses through whatever piping+mufflers+cats you are running. The more restriction, the more power is used by the engine to push the gasses through.
