o/r h vs. o/r x over 3,000 RPMs
I have an '04 GT with an O/R H pipe and the magnapack catback. I like the overall sound for the most part, however between 3,000 and 4,000 RPM it makes a popping sound. Now I read somewhere that the difference between the H and the X is that the H doesn't merge the exhaust pulses after 3,000 RPM. Is this the main reason for the popping? And if I replace it with an o/r X will that get rid of that sound?

Chances are a o/r x will smooth that out a bit. My buddy did the same thing with his Stingers, and it mellowed out a bit at lower rpms.
I did the same thing when i was playing around with different mid pipes with my SSS cat back. The o/r x was smoother than the o/r h.
I think you will fine this to hold true a lot of the time when dealing with straight through style mufflers.

What you've read is correct to a point. It's not that the H doesn't merge the exhaust pulses after 3000rpm it's that above 3000 RPM the H pipe won't equalize the pulses above 3000 RPM. Above 3000 rpm the pressure between both sides of the exhaust essentially create a wall of exhaust in the pipe that act as a barrier. When you do a quick rev the popping you hear is the sudden break in that barrier as the RPM goes over 3K (creates the barrier) then quickly drops back down (breaks the barrier). Quick changes in pressure.
X pipes don't usually suffer from this but do sound raspier than a H pipe.

Great info guys, thanks. That makes my decision easier. I think i'm gonna go for the X pipe. I can live with it being raspy if it tones down some of that god awful popping.

general consensus is any chambered muffler sounds better with an H pipe (ive had a couple sets of flowmasters with a prochamber, 2 different X pipes, and an H pipe) and i agree. the x pipe was a little louder but made the flows sound like garbage.
X pipes tend to make non-chambered exhaust sound better.

I disagree. I personally don't like straight through style mufflers on a Mustang (Stingers/ glasspacks/ ect).
I love the way they sound with an O/R X pipe and a chambered muffler. It's all personal preference, but I love my setup. I wish I had a camara worth a damn so I could post up some exhaust clips.

well INSIDE my car the flows sounded like horse**** with the X, but outside the car they sounded good and i got compliments from EVERYONE to import guys and little old ladies in parking lots. outside they sounded good but it sounded like someone was rattling pennies in my back seat. with the H it really cleared the sound up inside but outside the car doesnt have the same scream.
