Default Lurker with a header question

Hi, my name is Jason and I'm new here, well I have been lurking and looking and researching for years but I actually have a question now. I am ready to begin the performance phase of my 90 GT. I'm doing the GT40p heads because this is a budget build. I also have a GT40 upper and lower, Comp Cams .512 lift cam, Moroso intake, 70 mm throttle body and car will be egr/emissions bypassed, and 4.10 gears and after it's built I will tune it. I have everything EXCEPT headers. The car sees very little use, mostly when my old *** wants to pretend I'm cool, haha. So for the occasional driver that might engage in a stop light to stop light race, nothing will ever be highway speeds because I have kids and they are usually with me. And of course I don't want to get beat by kids in ricers. I might go to the track once a year and I will trailer it. Where is my benefit of long tubes over shorties? They seem like a hassle and I fully see why some people would benefit from them but in my case, can someone please advise what kind of headers would be best for my application?

Thanks!

with out going to far into detail about long vs short, long tubes provide a better torque curve , for instance...
If your engine with shorties is making power from 2500 to 4500 rpm by installing Long tubes you may start making power sooner and extend it longer so say long tubes installed now your making power from 2300 to 4700 rpm. Combine this with other modifications such as gears , larger heads , intake , and cam . Now the long tubes make a greater difference.
Are they worth the added effort of installing ? I believe so.
An added benefit of long tube headers is the sound, , You just have to love that classic header sound.

As of right now I have shorties , but once I get the cash around for them Im going to long tubes on my lx. I had them on my 94 and loved them.

Long tube headers will make 5-20 more hp (depending on the combination) than shorties. Long tubes are not emissions legal, but mine passed Ohio emissions testing for years. The main down side to long tubes is you lose ground clearance, and they also require a different X/H pipe. Long tubes are well worth it in my opinion, but shorties are easier and cheaper.

GOTTA love the long tube headers if you are not going with a turbo or supercharger. just raw motor they are the best thing smoking. They really dont effect clearance on the foxies because they are all ready low.

87 vert, msds, longtubeheaders,GT 40 heads, E303 cam, SR cold air intake

Id also suggest you instal a fender well cold air intake, with a 65mm throttle body to match the opening of your engine's gt-40 intake while giving you even more ponies.

Since your a city boy, some 3:73 rear gears should put you in order.
While your back there add new clutches to your posi.

Screw the short and long block theory. The longs block add weight to the front of the 5.0, the 302 does not.Shall you ever feel your stock 302 is the limit to a build, way cheaper to buy a dart block 302 block new or used. They can handle extreme boost and whatever you throw at it without splitting in half.

While I'm here, I have these gt40p heads but I have a hook on heads and machining and he has a set of 351w heads that are built up pretty nice. Not ported or polished or anything like that but have been rebuilt with valve springs that could take up to a .600 lift cam. They flow pretty good air (in theory) so that being said, do you guys think I might benefit any more from the 351 heads over the gt40p heads that I already have?

I just realized this is in the wrong section, I thought I created it in the general 5.0 discussion, would someone be able to move it please? Thanks!
