I am looking to buy a radar detector to hopefully save me the hassle and cost of going to court for speeding tickets and the subsequent rises in my insurance rates; however, I would rather not have to sacrifice style to do it. I have heard that cordless detectors are not all that reliable. Is it possible to have a corded detector installed so that is as unobtrusive as possible, or do you just have to deal with a big, clunky cord?

I have had radar detectors in every car I've owned since the early 80's and have never
used the hanging down wire. It is very easy to wire them directly to the accessory
fuse so they come on when you start the car.
I now have a rechargable detector (forget the model) and it works great. I used
double sided exterior tape to attach it between the dome lights, hardly noticeable.

If you have the correct type of rear view mirror, check out our Invisicord.
Most decent radar detectors come with both a power card for cigarette lighter use plus another for direct wiring. With the direct wiring cord, you can mount the detector as close to the headliner as possible (providing you have no obstructions on/in the windshield) to keep it from easily being spotted. The trade off here is loss of sensitivity to laser (for laser, closer to the dash is better).
There are a few models that offer remote heads but they're very pricey IMO. I know that BEL makes one in the STI model line.
You can wire it to the lights or any other DC source near your rear view mirror. There's a clip-on device that includes a fuse. I forget what it's called.

Add a fuse. All of like 4 bucks at O'Reilly's. That's how I did my raptor.
