Just to avoid any confusion for new readers in #110 above you are talking about your track day experience at Summit Point with your Vette not your Mustang. Please keep sharing them with us.
What is your entry speed into Turn 1, i.e. how much do you have to slow down from 140 to get through the corner?

I'm really starting to feel the limitations of a stock brake system. The brakes on my Vette are almost identical to those on the GT. PBR two piston, floating caliper. Same size rotor. In the past I have wax'd on about how this system is suitable for most drivers with the simple pad, fluid, ducts and SS line upgrade - and indeed they have served me well. However, as I've progressed in run groups and the accompaning increase in speeds I've grown less confident in their ability. Time to start looking into that BBK.
It's worse when you find yourself sans most of your brakes when you're just starting out. Link is to a build thread for a 400 hp early Mustang that's seeing autocross and track day duty. Once you get much past autocross, brakes get really important really quickly.

You are correct - I only track the bowtie now. I try to keep my "track day" posts limited to car independent info and hope you all enjoy reading them. The reason I mentioned the brakes above is because they are so similar to the stock Mustang GT brakes.
I really need to get some data acquisition tools. I don't know my entry speed to turn 1 (too busy worrying if the car is going to stop to look down). I'm guessing its in the 50 MPH range and in looking at videos with DA overlay posted on StreetFire I'd say thats in the ball park. Its initally a pretty tight corner and then opens up to a 2nd apex (Turn 2).

Wow - 140 down to 50 - that is hard on brakes! At Mosport the worst is from 130 down to about 70.

Got my first top ten finish at auto x last night. All of the drivers ahead of me have significantly more experience than me, and they are all on better r-comps. I'm on nearly dead V710s. I got a 55.2 but I coned the run.
Jeff J missed the national title by 0.001 secs last year. He is an autocrossing God.
Chris - you are in Canada? How does your classes work - a Mustang straight up against S2000, Corvette, WRX is not very fair so I'm guessing you have some sort of PAX or adjustment? Great Job, congrats!! You kicked the other S197's butt by ~5 seconds. Pretty darn good.

Yes, Winnipeg, Canada. What I copied was just the raw times results. There are 4 main classes in our club, stock R-comps, stock street tires, modified R-comps, and modified street tires. The PAX rankings are used to handicap each class. So for instance, the vette that was a couple seconds ahead only slightly beat me in PAX.

I just got back from a lapping day at Mosport, my 5 th this year and 4th at Mosport. The event was different as I was the only Mustang there. Most of the car were of Japanese origin, including three EVO 10s, but there a sprinkling of M3s and a few Porsches, including at least 3 GT3's! There also quite a few all out race cars and one of these was a really nice Koni Challenge Nissan 350Z.
Mosport is a fast track, 130 MPH top speed for me, with 10 corners and lots of elevation changes.
We were split into two groups, intermediate and advanced and to run in the latter group you had to have a competition license. The groups alternated every 1/2 hour with a break for lunch. In other words lots of track time. Passing was only allowed on a wave by and for our intermediate group on three of the straights. The advanced folks could pass when waved by anywhere except for an apex.
Early in the day the track was pretty busy but later on it was very open. I've got to go through my data to see how my times were but a check at the track showed at least one lap 1.2 seconds faster than my previous best.
One of the frustrating things was a lot of the other cars were on R Comps so considering this and their weight they were faster than I was through the corners. If I let them past then I was all over their backsides every time we hit a straight!
This was my first session with the Hawk HP Plus pads and they performed well were smooth and seemed to haul the car down nicely. Again the data will show how well they were working. The new fine thread spindle to hub bolts were also installed on Thursday so that made me feel more comfortable.
Tomorrow I'll post some video.

I just returned from my weekend at Road America in Elkhart Lake, WI (a 14 turn, 4 mile long track). Thought I would share some of the experience with folks.
Sadly, our weekend was plagued with rain. Changing pads (to Carbotech XP10s all around) in the rain is not fun, but it’s all part of the experience. I was only able to get four dry sessions in, and unfortunately due to acquisition failures I only got data on the two worst sessions. Still, when the track was dry and the tires warmed up, the Mustang was in very fine form!
My goal this year was to break 3 minute lap times. Last year my best was a slow 3:05, and a track buddy of mine, Jim, smoked me with a 2:56 in his bone stock Mustang of the same year with superior tires than mine (hey, he’s also a stud driver and knows the track like the back of his hand). With almost all my suspension modified and the Toyo R1R tires on (in addition to quality schooling I received this year at Bondurant), I felt confident I could meet my goal and then some…secretly, I really wanted to match Jim’s time.
Well mission accomplished! We ran a best (recorded) time of 2:53, and that was on the first session of the weekend! My line was still pretty jacked up and I was cold and working out some trouble spots on track, so I was shocked at the improvement in time. Also, I had an overheating problem the last time out (Autobahn Country Club), and I was taking it easy at the top end of two of the three straights (“coasting” at 120). So I felt very confident that a solid 2:50 was within grasp for the weekend, and if I pushed it maybe even break into the 40s. I even think I got one or two such laps, but the data logger was locked and I didn’t have someone doing backup timing for me. I only have my feeling that I was much more on line and carrying speed through some critical corners/segments to back the claim up.
But no worries, right, I mean I had all weekend to back it up…right? Then the rain came in. Forget lap times, we were out there to improve skid control skills and make our outputs more subtle. Damn!
Well, the bottom line is that the car is performing exceptionally well. (Thanks Sam!) There’s hardly a hint of understeer, she feels super evenly balanced, and the R1Rs just flat rock! They had really shown in the rain, where we were dominant over everyone on the field. In the dry they mismatched me in the wrong group, and I passed everyone (save one Porsche) and lapped half the field. I even got a few comments on the car and our times, so it was nice to be noticed.
Here’s a couple of quick data summaries:
Best time: 2:53
Top speeds: 120 (front straight, coasting), 120 (inner straight, coasting), 120 (back straight), 110 (front straight, in the rain), 100 (inner straight, in the rain)
Top corner speeds: 105 (the Kink), 80 (back chicane, the “Bill Mitchell Bend”), 75 (Carousel)
Top lateral g’s: .97g (Carousel), 1.19g (Turn 3), 1.00g (average all corners)
I also have a turn-by-turn guide/debrief that I wrote up for myself. I’m willing to share with anyone who’s interested, and maybe I’ll put it up in a separate post (it’s long). If I can get the camera back from my old-man maybe I can get my fast lap posted as well.
