I run 285/40/18s front and rear on 9.5 wide rims. They did not rub at stock heigh but the left front does rub very slightly at full lock after the car was lowered with Steeda Competition springs. The Tire Rack web site calls for these tires to be installed on 9.5 to 11 inch wide rims.

If you run this wide a tire at the front be prepared to live with "tramlining" Which is described by Wikipedea as "is the tendency of a vehicle's wheels to follow the contours in the surface upon which it runs. The term comes from the tendency of a car's wheels to follow the normally recessed rails of street trams, without driver input in the same way that the train does.

Tramlining can usually be blamed on tires, and its incidence depends greatly on the model of tire and its state of wear. Although not normally dangerous, at very high speeds it can become a source of instability.

I speak from experience when I say 285s tramline badly. It's very frustrating and takes some of the fun out of driving on the street. 255 is probably the ideal "street" tire size but doesn't afford enough grip for road or auto x racing.

+1

I run 285s in the summer and they tramline badly and you need to pay close attention while driving but in the winter my 255s are OK.

So having the wider tires in the back with a solid rear axle won't affect the wear on the tires without being able to rotate them ???

And if I do get a smaller size for the front, and they are directional, what i just have to have a toe check every couple months since they can't be rotated ?
