Recently I replaced the stock control arms on my 09 GT with J&M control arms. Now, at low speeds and more so at higher speeds, you hear a whining noise from the rear as well as some clanking. Is this due to the fact that they are more rigid than the stockers? Is the noise now being transfered into the cabin because of the upper control arm having less rubber insulation? I would assume this is the issue since the upper control arm attaches to the diff and then to the body of the car. Does this sound right?

Yep, for me it was whem I put on the Steeda adjustable upper control arm that gave me some minor NVH and clunking.. You'll get used to it after awhile..
Ditto. Same here once the Steeda upper arm was installed.
All told, it could be far worse...just imagine if I didn't have the OEM differential bushing in there to dampen the sound! FWIW, I installed mine and drove it for a year as a DD (now she's retired and living the life of a track toy); you do get used to it.

I put the "polyball" lowers on the car in July. Initially they were silent, now at lower speeds over small bumps I get a bit of a clunk from the rear of the car. I do not get this sound when travelling faster over much more severe bumps. Strange and annoying. I ought to check the torque on the bolts again, #37 on my list of things to do.
In your case the whinning is probably diff vibrations being transferred now. What you report sounds pretty typical. Unfortunately performance and comfort are at opposite ends of the spectrum, unless you drive a BMW.

Yeah I have gear whine at speeds over 75 mph after switching my stock lcas for J&M fixed length poly-ball LCA's. I was thinking of replacing the upper as well, but if that causes a lot more NVH, i might just do relocation brackets instead.

Yes, skip the UCA, its not worth the headache of installing and adjusting, and you wil hear more unwanted noise. I have one but would never do it again.

Looking back now, if it wasn't for having to adjust my pinion angle because of being lowered with a 1Piece Aluminum Drive Shaft, I would have left it alone. Ya, not only for the additional NVH and slight clunking, but it was a royal PITA to install and set up...
Awesome feedback guys!! I installed my j&m lowers about a month ago & have had no problems or noise. I skipped the upper & was going to have a shop install due to the PITA that the job would be + I'm not confortable with the whole adjustment factor!
Now you guys got me thinking wether to do the upper at all.....

Hey Mike, this is only my two cents here, but if I were you at this point, I would leave well enough alone until you absolutely had to. If you don't have any major wheel hop issues, need your pinion angle adjusted and have had no other problems or noise ...JUST LEAVE IT ALONE...!!! It's really not worth it just for the sake of being able to say You have an UCA . Getting wrenches up in there is obviously possible, but let me tell you, it can be a reeeeeeal challege and major PITA (IMO).!!!!

Then you don't have anything that needs fixing, at least for now. Wait until you have an identifiable problem before going any further. Then fix whatever the problem turns out to be instead of guessing at it now.
