How good is the S197 on a road course? Good enough to win the national championship. For those of you who don't know - the National Auto Sports Association held its annual championship races last week at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah. Mustangs compete mainly in the American Iron class (There is also AIX as in Extreme, but those cars aren't anything resembling stock). The S197 has not exactly been flocked to as 'the' car to have in AI but its becoming more and more prevalent. This year, there were 15 cars in the AI class, 6 of them S197s. And they finished 1st and 4th. Not to bad - these cars aren't that far from stock. So all praise the S197, way to go.

The guy that won is Ross Murray. I helped do the grunt work while building the car. It's very well done. He is crew chief on the Speed GT mustangs.
One of the trick pieces on his car is the k-member. He built the car himself - suspension and all. For anybody interested in the basics of his setup, here you go -
Front -
1. Bilstein struts - standard S197 HD's (Ross has probably had them revalved by now) with the spring mounts cut off and 2.5" coilover springs installed
2. Ross Murray k-member
3. c/c plates
Rear -
1. Ross Murray lower control arms (rod ends)
2. Ross Murray third link (rod ends) adjustable, NICE
3. Ross Murray watts link (rod ends) VERY NICE
4. Penske shocks w/ true coilovers (F'ing SEXY)
5. Ross Murray relocation brackets
If anybody is interested in a k-member, he gave me one on consignment to sell, as he is constantly on the road with the Speed GT series or other customers. if anyone is interested in it, shoot me a pm. Here is what it looks like -

I was wondering if you knew him, SoCal and all. True coilovers on the rear, very cool, do you have any pictures? Thanks for the info Matt. When are you going to make it to nationals?

I'll be at Nationals next year for TT. My '06 will be majorly reconfigured. AI is probably out of the question. I have no chance competitng with Pat Lindsey's checkbook and skill, or Ross' or Burnet's skill. That's too much money to spend to get my ass handed to me.

If anyone is interested, you can watch an onDemand replay of the NASA national championship race for AI and AIX on www.speedcasttv.com. Many of the races are posted so you just have to look for the AIX one and you can see all the S197s giving it their all. Its free to watch the small version, takes a membership to watch the full screen.
It was quite a race. As mentioned above - Ross Murray won it. I won't spoil the ending but to say he didn't lead until the last couple corners of the last lap.
