Default OEM 2014 wheels on a 2012, and now having problems

hey everyone,

so I bought 2014 stock GT rims off someone and assumed that it would go on my car no problem. was originally running the 2012 stock 17" x 7" with 40mm offset. these are 19" x 8.5" with 50mm offset. now that they're on, I'm having lots of rubbing at full lock (so much so that the car will no go anywhere). Turns out the inner parts of the front rims are rubbing right against the control arm. I know the offset is more positive but other rims, like the 2012 lagunas, fit no problem as far as I know on my model year and that one is 42mm offset but the width is 9". Plus I really didn't think that control arm setup or mounting space would be different between a 2012 and 2013-2014 (I still don't think it is).

So is there something else going on? Is the only solution to get wheel spacers? If so can anyone recommend a good one, at 10mm or 15mm?

Also while driving on a nice straight smooth surface once in a while my car tries to kill me and go either left or right suddenly...having to drive with both hands on the wheel for safety. is this problem related? there's no rubbing if the car is going straight

pic is of my car with the rims in question

Rubbing - you almost certainly have different steering stops on your car than the GT the wheels came off of does. Yours let the wheels steer too far for the 18" wheels. You can either get the stops for 18" wheels or learn how far to not turn past.

Worst case, that part number might have been superseded, but if that's the case the new number should come up for the parts counter guy.

Twitchy steering - I'm betting on the 18" wheel & tire setup having turn-in response that's significantly quicker than what you're used to. If this is the case - like it was when I first got my '08 GT, things will settle down in a couple of weeks or so. Meaning you'll stop making steering inputs that are "too big" for what the car needs that sends you into cycles of over-correcting yourself first one way and then the other.

Dang Norm, I have a 2012 & it had 17's I got 18x9 American Racing w/ 44mm offset and have no problems? Tires are 245/45/18 but I could run 275/40/18's.

I'm betting that you don't have a whole lot of clearance at full lock, and got a bit lucky with the involved build tolerances stacking up in your favor, where in AMP's car they may have stacked up against what he's done.***

AMP has hard interference between the wheel and the control arm.

*** If my Mustang could be released to me with cambers more negative than max negative per Ford's alignment specs (this being favorable to me and my driving), I'm sure that the need for different steering stops can also vary from car to car.

Your car probably came from the factory with different steering stops.

These should help:

wow thanks a lot guys, had no idea
looks like an easy fix and better than wheel spacers. I've been learning to not turn the wheel all the way but installing different stops will make it easier
