Default 3.31 on a GT500? but why..

Sup Fella's

As i mentioned in my other topic i'm looking for my future GT500 and was reading up on some tech info. I saw in another topic that the GT500 only came with a 3.31 gear ratio.
Is there any reason why they went so low? If i remember correctly a manual stock GT came with a 3.55 gear ratio. After reading the "kissing cousins" topic, in which they say the same tranny in the CTS-V had a 3.73 gear ratio, i just wondered why it wasnt also stock for the GT500.

Are there any owners that changed the gearing for their GT500?
Also just read that the new 2010 Mustangs come with an optional 3.73 ratio.
Wish it'd had been an option when i bought my Stang. I changed my gearing 2 months ago and i get a dreaded noise when decellarating, maybe also when accelerating but i might not hear it due to the catless borla's. Again bought NEW 3.73's this time from FRPP along with the Master shim kit. Still waiting for my Royal Purple diff. fluid to arrive. (does the royal purple also require friction modifier?)

In my experience, 3.31's are fine. With minor mods these cars make so much power 1st gear is virtually useless. With 3.73's it would be even worse.

The GT500 has so much power that putting in 3.73 gears would make it even less streetable than it already is.
No sense in putting in new gears, and getting the kinds of problems you're experiencing, with 500 hp on tap. Of course if you want to set new lap records what's a little gear whine?

And on that note, has anyone already tried going with smaller gears like say, 2.90s?

3.31 on a 6-speed does not equal 3.31 on a 5-speed

right?

That's right.
The gear ratio of all gears are obviously different between the 2 trannies.
The first gear on the 6 spd will be shorter (taller number), so that makes up for the 3.31 rear axle ratio...

Everything I am reading says they come with 3.55 stock. 3.73 isn't offered according to the mustang website,

Usually the more engine hp/tq is the less aggressively it will be geared. The CTS-V may not have had the low/mid range power so the 3.73 was more fitting. Sometimes tranny gearing can play a role, like '03-'04 Machs and Cobras. Both have 3.55s, but 1st gear in the Mach's 5 spd. is 3.38, and just 2.97 1st gear for the Cobra's 6 spd. Again, the car with less power gets the needed steeper gear. '07-'09 GT500 is 3.31, 2010 is 3.55 with a taller .50 6th gear. 1/4 mi. got quicker while MPG went up. 3.73s are not available on GT500, only optional on GT and standard on KR and Super Snakes.

I believe that the CAFE stds had some bearing on the use of the 3.31 for the GT500.
