If the 5.0 is an auto, it that will improve the 1/4 mile time by quite a bit, and consistency.

If you care mainly about drag racing.. i think an auto 5.0 is probably the best choice

Pretty sure theres a guy making like 900+ rwhp on stock internals with an auto 5.0 turboed here on the boards too. (not saying this is a good idea)

The Whipple kit that is featured in the first video sells for $9249 from lethal performance, with an extra $160 for whipple 123mm CAI, and another $362 for 72lb injectors (which will be needed at the 650+ rwhp level). Thats $9771 before you even take into consideration the 1pc DS, McLeod clutch, etc.... Compared to $4500 for a VMP TVS with CAI & injectors, $1000 for LTs, and $600 for a 10% lower balancer.

In the second vid, the comparison was to a stock GT500 with a pulley and tune. The 5.0 SHOULD have won.... Would be a different story against a car with a blower swap.

I will agree about the auto though. I can't tell you how bad I wish mine was automatic.... Would be much faster.

I drove two '08 GT500's after I put together a 4.6L with a Roush Supercharger. The GT500's had more torque obviously, but frankly I liked the performance of my little 4.6L much better than the Shelby.

It is true a Shelby holds its value better for sue, but a 5.0L with supercharger cost a lot less up front to try to recover. The 4.6L you see on this post cost me half the price of a Shelby and is a quick little car to drive. I'm only interested in 0-60/70 performance and even my 4.6L is pretty quick up to 70. 70-200 is where the extra HP is obvious.... and I'm not interested in killing myself or someone else on the highway.

Having said all that, I could enjoy a GT500 if Ford would sell me one at a reasonable price. Where I live the Ford dealers act like they are doing you a favor to ALLOW you to buy a GT500 while they will deal on a 5.0L GT, so a 5.0L GT with an added supercharger is the most bang for the buck!

That's why you don't purchase one of the showroom floor. I purchased mine with less than 9k miles on it for less than a fully loaded new 5.0 costs. How would dumping money into a blower and ALL of the other supporting mods into a 5.0 be the most bang for the buck? Now mine has a little under 35k miles on it now and I've had it two years. I could probably almost sell it for what I paid for it, if not more...

Of course I was talking new car to new car... not new to used! You may have been very lucky to find a used Shelby without problems at a good price, but I don't see many out there I would trust based on how some are driven.

An other issue is that I don't want most of the Shelby mods. Some of them make the car less enjoyable to drive for those that aren't going to race it! Some mods (in my opinion of course) do not make the Shelby look better.... just different than a GT. About all I want from the Shelby is the engine, trans. & brakes.

My point is that buying a new 5.0L at a good price and spending another $9K approx. for a supercharger at a Roush dealer will give you a pretty nice car to drive at a reasonable price. Of course it will not be a Shelby, but then you don't have to recover the Shelby price if you sell it down the road.

If you must have a Shelby.... then you have to buy a Shelby!

I'm not a Classic Snob. I'd rather have a '61 Fuelly Corvette that has all the correct numbers parts added in a restoration than pay four or ten times as much for a car that was built with all those parts originally. I buy a car for what it is when you drive it rather than its "bloodlines". I'd also rather have a car a nice as it came from the factory rather than rusted, chipped, faded and worn and call it "Patina"! I'm 71 and look into the mirror in the morning and see some "Patina" on my face I wish I could get rid of! LOL!

(Just one guy's opinion!)

The red one above is a Mustang Concept Car from 1961..... honest!
