agreed! when all of you are driving around today in your 30-40 grand saleens look around. the average car on the road is worth $6,000. Im a car dealer, ive tried selling everything from 20-30 grand cars to $1,500car. 2000 to 6000 is were its at.

Well, the flip side of that is that there is a market for us that do not want to be like the average Joe. We need to be patient, and find a deal on a 70k car, and get it for half price. Once the initial hit is taken, we stand to not lose anywhere near that type of percentage. I did that with my Z06, I bought it last year, drove it for a year, and sold it for more than I paid. Being a dealer, you would really know what it is like to have access to auctions where you can buy cheap, and then most dealers (not neceasarily you) rape the consumer. Then when it comes time to get rid of the car,m the consumer is in bad shape. Buying from a personal seller, who for some reason or another is hurting to sell, and sells cheap is where it is not that bad. I am not talking investments obviously, but it does not need to be an extramely painful ownership either as long as you have patience on waiting for the right deal.
Ask a Porsche dealer, Mercedes, BMW etc. what their average sale is.....nowhere near 6k. Different flavors for different people.

ORIGINAL: AL_TOON

RESALE is bad on upper end cars

2008 sl 550 = $105k
2006 sl = 55k

2008 maserati QT -$110k
2006 maserr - $65k

2008 m5 90k
2006 m5 55k

it happens. car values sink
if you are worried about resale buy a car that is used but as new as you can find or just lease (never heard of leasing a saleen)
Well said, AL_TOON. You beat me to the point. I have a friend who recently bought a used SL55 for less than 50% of MSRP. To put that in perspective, imagine easily finding an E for about $35k, or a 281SC for $28k.

The E posted here $42k w/ 22k miles, right? Soit retained ~56%of MSRP (~$75k) after 2 years. In the world of niche-market, high end, expensive performance cars, that's not bad.

This is why I've only bought one new car in 20 years. I prefer buying a 1-year old used car with low miles from a distressed buyer (broke, moving, divorce, etc). Here in L.A., you can't throwa stick without hitting some guy driving a way too-expensive car he really can't afford (like my friend who owned a 911 vert AND a Land Cruiser, but lived in a 1-berdroom apartment)...

For those interested, here areseveral AMG/Mercedes SL55s listed or sold for about 50% of original MSRP (~$135k-$145k, depending on the options):
