That's weird. The underside of my '07 Liztick Red Saleen's hood is painted. This photo shows it (not well, admittedly, but it's the only one I have):
I think I said this to you before when I saw this pic a couple years ago, but no way I'd let that dude near my car (even witha factory paint job) while on his beach cruiser [] Kids & people in general on bikes, scooters, skates, skate boards, etc...should not be allowed on the grounds of a car show [:@] Its just a silly little accident waiting to happen!
Sorry - I know I'm anal, but just a car show etiquete pet peave of mine [8D]
As for the paint question, I thought all of the Custom Paint jobs back in '05-'06 had to come from Irvine [&:] Either way, you can't tell me that skimping on the underside of the hood is enough of a cost savings when you consider all the other pain-staking steps they go through
I agree that this is not saving much, but he said it was a business decision. I spoke to Jeff Clark. He is the Saleen rep for the North region. His number is 949-836-6795. Good number to have. He knows what he is talking about/

You did tell me that, and less than a year ago, too! Fortunately there have been no bicycle riders at any of the other shows I've attended.
When I ordered my car, I was told that Troy did most of the custom paint jobs for newly-ordered cars. I had the impression that Irvine was mainly for touch-ups and painting existing customer cars. I do agree that not painting the bottom of the hood couldn't save that much money...gad, my car's original color was Grabber Orange; imagine how that would look!
I am very comfortable with what he told me. Do I agree with it, no, but I barely got it out of my mouth, and he told me immediately why it was not painted. He did explain in detail too. I am forgetting some of it because I had Warranty on my other ear, and the warranty guy was asking for my VIN# etc. I wanted to see what both said. The regional guy knew his stuff.
Also, I just did a search on Ebay to look at some pics of 2006 GT's. I can tell you that all GT's have the hood painted underneath form Ford. That meansSaleen actually painted mine black. If you read up on the Saleen documentation, they require a certain color from Ford first to then paint the car a custom color. The color when doing Lizstick red was some kind of Ford red first.
This means they painted it Black under there. He did say the paint is extremely expensive, and it is like a 4 step process. I am sure if they do a lot of them, just one coating it with Black saves them a a decent amount of money on supplies, but much more in Labor. Let's not forget a hood would take a nice bit of paint. I am no painter, but it does have a lot of surface area.
Again, I do not agree, butI am satisfied with his answer as the only other option was that the hood was replaced. The paint looks way too good for that to be the case, and matches absolutely perfect.

Remember that for SC cars and up they scrap the factory hood though.

Good point: it's obviously easier to apply the fancy paint to an unpainted metal hood rather than strip and repaint the stock hood! Although it's not obvious in the photo, my car is supercharged.
Wow, good point again. I did not realize that. I thought they modified the stock hood somehow....Either way, the Saleen rep has no reason to lie about it. He said it was a business decision. I would love to know how much they actually saved per job though. I know the price in 07 went up to 17k also as opposed to the 15k in 06. Perhaps people were complaining about the hood, so they charged more, and started painting it again.
