Don't see how it can be fuel pump, or plugs as it would not run at all with a problem there. Sounds like an ignition issue to me. Some type of sensor?

Try having your starter tested. That could very well be your problem, as was in the case of my mom's Expedition. It would struggle to start even after the engine was warm.

Is this happening in farily hot weather?? If so what tends to happen on the early returnless fuel system cars is the fuel in the rail vapor locks from the heat,, as soon as you get this put the pedal to the floor which will open the injectors while cranking and get rid of the pressure build up quickly and it should start right up.
It was a issue we saw on these cars, (and the S7) in hot weather, cranking it with the throttle wide open worked every time.
(make sure you take your foot off the throttle when it catches!)
