Guys, when I talk about "dealer cost", I'm not talking about worth, or value, or anything like that. I'm talking about the bottom line $ that the dealer pays for the car. There is a base model "invoice", an upfitters "invoice", and a "holdback". A dealer's profit = Sales price - base invoice - upfitter's invoice + holdback. This isn't counting rebates, which complicate the equation... At least, that's how I imagine Saleens are structured

The numbers for the base GT that a Saleen is built on are pretty easy to get hold of. What I don't know is what the invoice is on the Saleen packages. Its probably a pretty closely guarded secret, but it can't hurt to ask! You can be sure that the dealer knows this information to the penny when going into a negotiation, and the best bargaining position for the buyer is if he also knows that number.

Chris.

Chris, if this tells you anything the Dealer can drop 20K off the price or more and still make some money off from an upfitted car.

I've seen the prices drop as much as 30k off the total price after a car has been sent to an upfitter like saleen, and when I purchased mine it went pretty close to invoice, as a matter of fact I was making the sales managers mad after negotiating for 4 hours they finally showed me thier bottom line and had to have the general manager approve the deal.

The salesmen always love selling these vehicles because of the 20k or more markup lets them make alot more money on the deal and you.

If you just "lay down" when you purchase then you will regret the depreciation even more, but when you negotiate your best deal then you will "feel good" about your choice.

Since you are probably using the some of the same websites as other smart buyers use like edmunds.com

http://www.edmunds.com/advice/strategies/articles/45993/article.html

After being on both sides of the sales desk I will never pay sticker again, but in the same sense I will not dick around and not buy when I get my best price from them, when I start negotiating seriously I had dam well be ready to buy it! Or walk out if you don't get the deal that works best for you.

The markup on these cars is RIDICULOUS.

We got a little bit of a discount on our 2008 S281 SC this spring, but it wasn't $10K or anything like that. I don't know if we could have done better buying one off of the lot or not. We actually ordered ours and had it optioned exactly the way we wanted, so that was worth the "extra" money to us.

The bottom line is what the car is worth to you. If you wouldn't mind telling us what a GT "cost" the dealer I would love to know.

OK, this is "internet information", i.e. I wouldn't swear by it, but I found this after a quick search, I got the following from http://www.carseek.com

GT Premium
Base Invoice Price: $29,590
Base List Price: $32,245
Destination Charge: $795>
Gas Guzzler Tax: $0
Average Sales Tax and Fees: $1,669
Dealer Holdback: $967
Target Price: $30,031

So dealer cost should be 29590-967 = $28623 - not counting rebates, or any other "kickbacks" that might exist.
