Yes because it helps the pistons "seat" properly and breaks in the motor gradually. Will the car not run properly if you start beating on it sooner maybe. Its one of those "its better to be safe than sorry."

Some people subscribe to the "beat it hard" method of engine break in. I have to say that the best engine we had in a road race car had zero break in before we ran in it in a 12 hour endurance race. It was a new stock engine in a 300zx turbo that we got in the car just in time to start the race. We blew up the old motor the day before the race and put in our new "zero hour" spare in. We ran that same engine for 2 more years before we rebuilt in a higher horsepower monster. I am not recommending this method, but it does make you think.

^+1 I didn't say I "agreed" with the method just that its better to be safe and sorry. My original stock E motor popped a piston with 2400 miles on it. The motor has almost twice the power with 500 miles and we were beating on it since day one. I'm 100% sure it will last 10X longer.
