So there are a lot of products out there that make claims on what sort of HP and torque numbers they put out. Dyno sheets can be manipulated. Cars can be detuned and then retuned to make gains look more substantial. Does the product really work as well as they say it does? Is it worth the money? Is it better than advertised?
This is normally one of the first items people add to the saleen to cure belt slip. I plan on doing a back to back dyno run with the ONLY change being the addition of the idler pulley. No letting the car cool overnight. No dyno manipulation. No addition of other mods at the same time to skew the numbers. Straight up results.
The claim:
The website states that after installing an idler pulley on a 2000 Saleen S/C with a chicane 66mm pulley and a 110 belt
"the car saw a difference of 34 rwHP and 42 rwTQ on the dyno. This occurred at the same air to fuel ratio of 11.9 to 1."
The idler pulley is supposed to give you back 1 to 2 lbs of boost that you're currently losing because of belt slip. The power gains are throughout the curve and not just at the top end according to Scott Van Hoose, the manufacturer.
First impressions:
The pulley is very well constructed and can be powdercoated in your choice of color. Mine is black to match my "covert" sort of look as I'm not much for flashy things in the engine bay. Installation instructions seem very straightforward.
The test:
My car has several mods to the intake side so I would hope that the addition of 1 to 2 lbs of boost throughout the spectrum would force a lot more air into the supercharger and put up some numbers equal or at least close to what was claimed (34rwhp and 43 rwtq). I am running a 66mm chicane pulley, a chicane intercooler, an LFP heat exchanger and supertank, and a tork teck intake with an oval single blade throttle body.
Just to note: I am in no way connected to Mosaleen Performance. I purchased the pulley from the website and intend to give you an unbiased review of whether it works as claimed or not.
"Unbiased results: that's the 'gloo promise!"
Stay tuned for the back to back dyno results in the next couple of weeks.

Scott installed the pulley on my 2000 4.6 when we were in Birmingham at the 25th Anniversary. I have to tell you, when we went out of the park and I "hit it" a little, my wife say, WOW, was that the pulley? On my gauge I see 2 - 3 lbs of boost. You can feel the difference, response has stepped up quit a bit - if you have the Saleen SC and a cold air pipe, you know it screams a little, but the volume has turend up and is very noticeable.
It's the best money I have spent in a while for a performance piece
The claim is that everyone is getting belt slip and that it'll recover boost. I spoke with Scott on the phone and he assured me that the 99-04's have significant slip. Some belts are hitting the upper radiator hose as well. Mine didn't have any dust and was not hitting the hose, but he was confident in his product and told me all about the gains the idler pulley makes.
I might or might not be getting belt slip and the pulley may or may not help. We'll find out soon.
Good to hear, Charlie! It would be great to see a 34rwhp gain on the dyno just from an idler pulley!

I used to get noticable slippage, and tons of belt chirping on hard shifts... I got a smaller belt. problem solved.
Thanks for chiming in Jared! I did the same and went with a 112.5 belt after I switched to the 66mm pulley. Apparently you can go as small as a 112 on there. What size are you running?

I'm at a 112.5 as well. I went through alot of belts slipping and shredding before I got the 112.5 and solved both problems.
The claims I hear with the tensioner seem to have more to do with the way it makes the belt wrap around the pulley, thus getting more area to grip. I would imagine if you did this you would need to go back to a longer belt to get any sort of gains if any.

Curious to see your findings, hes mentioned hed be making an 8 rib kit for the 05+, when that comes I may try it if there are actualy gains from other models
