+1 on the extinguisher. Somewhere, maybe a Haggerty bulletin, I saw the most common insurance claim for older/classic/hot rods is for fire damage. A little damage is better than a write off.

on my MSD's all the boards are coated in thick epoxy. I don't think there's a way to get in there to repoint the solder joints or even test the different components.

Hmmm. a basic thing to check- how old is the radiator cap? If it's old then it may not be holding pressure which would allow water out and it would overheat pretty easily.
