You have to pull the axel out. It's very easy, pull the diff cover and remove a pin held in by an 8mm bolt. Then push the axle in and remove the c-clip and the axle should slide right out

Don't ignore it too long, after a while the throwout bearing will go out completely. Make sure you get a Ford throwout bearing, aftermarket bearing are known to squeal soon after the install

Depends what kind of headers you're looking for. If you put longtubes on while its out, you might have a bit of trouble fitting the tranny back in there with the limited space.
