Is the engine the factory balance or not? I would assume it is from your wording. there are 3 different external balances on Ford Windsor V8s. But I would place bets on the factory harmonic balancer...

It needs to be white hot to weld on properly. Almost melting hot. Try and call some big truck shops, we used to fix cast iron when I worked at Caterpillar years ago and would occasionally do odd job...

Because I was not happy about them wearing out after a year of minimal driving. I had MM stuff on my first Mustang that I daily drove from Jan 02 until Nov 2011 and never had an issue.
