Sounds like a misfire to me. In my experience these cars aren't eager to throw a misfire code even when running on 6 cylinders. check all your plug wire boots for any sign of spark leak

dont you have a 90 degree elbow on the hose? my PCV looks like the 2nd pic Cliff posted, then there's a rubber elbow on the plastic hose to the intake like this but i know Ford changed it a few times...
