It's sad, but I've worked at a dealership in the past and in some of the used cars with a noisy top or bottom end they'll put thick ass oil in it so it quiets it down till it sells.

Just reach into the fenderwell and grab a-hold of the top "tube" of the shock while you loosen the nut with a ratchet. If it's too tight to hold by hand grab it with some channel locks.
