42's will work fine...I run 42's on my 89 and it's only a 302 with a supercharger.....your problem lies in the fact you aren't running o2's thus putting the ecm into a FEM mode = failure effects...

have you checked for fuel delivery/fuel pressure...

have you checked for fuel delivery/fuel pressure and or spark??....simple can of spray start can verify if it's a fuel issue...and a used spark plug or spark tester to check ignition

has a koeo/koer test been run to check for codes?? ALSO DID YOUR MECHANIC CHECK FOR VACCUM LEAKS?? sounds like a lean part throttle hesitation....we use a smoke machine to check for such.

check the distributor.........make sure the roll...

check the distributor.........make sure the roll pin in the gear hasn't sheared....if it did, could have an oil pump issue......sounds like timing is off.....and if it is, it didn't just go out on...
