I wouldn't say that just because Chip Foose does something, that makes it alright. His cars are almost always overdone and tacky.

If your keeping the rest of the engine bay stock looking, I would try to retain the stock air cleaner. If you can't find a way to make it fit, I suggest the chrome HiPo air cleaner. This looks nice...

I also suggest washing with the method mentioned. All unsealed batteries vent gases and battery trays have always been a victim of this issue, some more than others.
