It's kind of a long shot but could it be belt chirp? The altnator pulley on the manual trans cars has a clutch in it. If that quit working, it could be that.

You don't have to pull the motor mount, but it makes it WAY easier if you do. Pull the mount and the stand off of the engine and jack it up an inch or two. You'll have all kinds of room for not much...
