Scouting Report 1/8/11:
Just got back from a quick, relative term, run though on the route that I originally drew out. And...making some changes.
Why? Well, I had planned out a route that was longer and used County Route 275 to that would merge into AL 176. This route is not for the faint of heart, or paint, or washed out road surfaces. Road was "paved", but using that term loosely. Whole time I was on 275 I was launching rocks into my undercarriage. Their signs meant serious business. They don't say "Land Slides" they say Earth Slides. Not just a little bit of land will be moving. We are talking the Earth here.
I was putting forward serious mental focus to just traverse the route. This was more of an off-road than on-road venture. Cautiously approaching crests and turns; finding more often than not an off-camber, loose gravel road that made a sudden change of direction just after coming over the hill. Exhibit A. There are moments when you are driving and you just have to stop and say - what the **** is this? That was one of them. Mess of a road. Damn near straight down. 8-10 cars working their way down this - nah, not going to do it.
Rewards. Beside feeling seasick. Were some outstanding humps of roads. Terrible surface aside. It was one long roller coaster of a ride. I am not a scary movie type of person. That section of 275 must be what those movie goes are after. Edge of your seat, *** puckering, what the **** was that driving experience.
So what am I scratching it? AL 176 was mush more enjoyable to drive. Note, not speed. Just get in the groove of the lane and let the car carry though through. The road surface is miles superior over 275. No more flying rocks. Not the undercarriage that I am worried about. But feeding the car behind you an asphalt blizzard is not my idea of a good time. Few oncoming cars don't know what that double yellow stripy thing is in the center of the road. There is zero reason to not be able to stick to the lane. Given our caliber of cars. This should be easily had.
