I would make sure your rocker arms are adjusted properly, but it sounds like a vacuum leak. Hopefully you didnt use the gaskets they give you for the ends of the intake a 1/4'' bead of silicone works best. You can also use four longer bolts with the heads cut off to keep the intake gasket from sliding on you ,and lines up the intake so your not moving it around on the gasket and silicone. You can also use a spray adhesive on the upper intake gasket to keep it in place. Hopefully you didnt adjust the rockers to tight and screw up the cam, I have done that once. good luck

if you dont have consistent strong vacuum to it.. it will act all kinda wierd... hence the reason cant really change cams. My intake port on my explorer intake was actually clogged for the vacuum line to my map sensor took me two days to figure it out.. my car ran... but smoked like a diesel... was running so rich. Come to find out i had no vacuum at all.

mustangjon, what fuel pressure are you running? I just put afr165 and 1.7 rr and ported explorer intake on my 88 and wonder what fuel pressure would be best.

ok i used a dab of silicone on the ends just to seal them, but didnt anywhere else, mine doesnt run that bad, but the idle sucks ass, i mean will burn your eyes when its idling, and when i unplug the ECT it idles a hell of a lot beter than with it, and mine went from 24mpg to 15mpg, just with a rering kit and 60cc chamber 351W heads, i mean dont get me wrong it runs and drives ok, but has a slight miss under load, and not getting the accleration i was getting with the wore out motor.

the speed density computer is dumb in the fact that it recalibrates itself by using vacum in the intake and o2 sensors so when you start adding bolt ons the computer practically changes nothing therfore changing your air fuel ratio, making your computer go crazy i had the same setup as you 88 mustang SD with 1974 351w heads and it would not idle and a hint of a miss on lower rpms i solved it by buying 89 mass air out of a junkyard and a harness conversion from ford and it ran better than it ever did
