Just how much power?

Just how much power?
Well, today I was cruising along, and this old Trans Am pulled up next to me, it sounded REAL nice, hadhuge meats on it and everything. Well, I was just following him along at about 30, and he got on it, and just lit'em up... So while he was turning I noticed he had it badged with a "455"... I know that 455's were in the 70's, but exactly how much power are these things putting out? For him to light'em up with that big of meats doin 30, he has to be packin some serious power...

What it made from the factory and what it makes now are probably two different things. A 455 in 1970 probably made ~450 HP and even more torque.

Those 454s weren't making major HP power like you would think, they did have tons and tons of torque..
Of course honestly I would say he was decently modded to turn over big meats from a roll considering they were kind of heavy.

A 1970 Buick, Olds, Pontaic 455 was making major HP, and even more torque. The reason they were not as fast as a Fox(for example)with 450HP is because, weight/aero, gearing(trans/rearend) suspension, and skinny tires. In 1970, think about it, they were running 4bbl(or 6bbl, or 8bbl.)big block motors, running on leaded gas, with little emmission restrictions. Compression was up there, heads/cams were nice pieces, etc. Then take into accont the car is built, the power, suspenion, traction, etc. has all been stepped up.

Look around today... small blocks
5.7L 346 cubic inch motor - 405hp (rated)
6.0L 364 cubic inch motor - 400hp (rated)
6.1L 370 cubic inch motor - 425hp (rated)
7.0L 427 cubic inch motor - 505hp (rated)
My point is...a big block
7.5L 455 cubic inch motor - 425hp (est) is hard to get excited about considering the much tighter retrictions we have today.
Maybe I am the only one that thinks like this so maybe I should have said "those 454s weren't making major HP power like I would think..."
