No, there are plenty of N/A 4V's and some N/A 3V's that make over 400hp(one is sold by Saleen) but yes, it does take heads, Cams etc, again, what part of 281 cubic inches is people missing. Chevy stopped making their 5.0 engine because it was getting it's rear handed to it by the 5.0 Ford.
Chevy decided that Cubic Inches are king and where they lacked cubic inches turned to blowers, just like Ford so I think it's a fair statement that both companys don't make a typical bolton 400hp5liter or less engine.
the 5.7 was the direct competition for the 5.0 Stangs, not the 305.
edit: i'm over here because i used to have an '83 4 banger Stang

Really, so there was no competition prior to the introduction of the 5.7?!?! Come on now, Chevy sure compared it and back then when I was racing against 5.0 Camaro's and TA's they sure wanted to compete. For 8 years the 5.0 from each camp was in competition against the other, to say the 305 wasn't and the 350 was is ignorant of the facts, but hey, this could be considered bickering, I guess we're not supposed to disagree so I'll end it here.

S'ok, I was just shocked that someone would think that equal sized engines wouldn't be considered competition. Ford and Chevy sure advertised them that way.

viking, i wasnt trying to say that it cannot be disputed...but i think that we both know that threads pitting GM versus Ford can often turn ugly, so i was making the comment before it got to that point. I was hoping to not have the thread hijacked, but such is life...
ive been to many tracks who offer a street class that seperates the vehicles by times, or by power adder/NA...ive never been to a track where they rank the cars by cubic inches, so i feel that a car making 400hp NA compared to a car making 400hp with FI is a legitimate issue. Dont get me wrong...im not against FI (obviously), and im not bashing ford at all, but they are the ones who chose to use small displacement engines, and then smaller displacement engines, and i dont understand why people bring up "its only 281 cubic inches".

But I am the KING of thread hijacks! You bring up a valid point, I guess what I was addressing is the point that people assume Ford needs a blower to make good power on a stock or bolt on engine. I felt pointing out the days GM had lower cubic inches the tables were a bit turned but you're right, at the track it doesn't matter, run what ya brung! I brought up it's only 281 cubic inches because I felt threatened by the fact I need a supercharger and my V8 is tiny, hows that for honesty 'eh?
