Why do I waste gas like this?

Why do I waste gas like this?
I work mostly early morning shifts, so my drive up to work is usually very uneventful. There is a part where I get on the highway, and I always gun it past other people. There is a good half a mile of service road before you get to the on ramp, and I just generally dislike sitting behind someone when merging.
The speed I merge with ranges from a normal 70 to low triple digits. Once on the highway I slow down to about 5-10 over (which over there means 70).
Yesterday someone in a Nissan Sentra R wanted to get even. I always look in my rear view, it's a habit from my motorcycling days in Europe. So I see a couple of lights closing in. Not awfully fast, but still. The guy obviously wants to return the favor. I was doing about 70, so I could have technically dropped it down to 4th and give it some gas. I decided to wait till he was a little closer and dropped it to 3rd while attempting to match the revs. I gave it the beans and the Sentra couldn't get past. I dropped down but he still had his foot down. So I did it again just for good measure. Then I let off, and the Sentra passed me slowly. No thumbs up, no nothing. He must have thought I was a douche. Oh well... I don't condone ricer flybys.
This happened before too, with a first gen RX7. Didn't have the guts to back up the flyby again, but he was noticeably faster than that Sentra R.
Sooner or later I'll get eaten by something faster than my stock 05. Shouldn't take to look I reckon, lots of faster stuff out there. But I must admit it is fun to play with fellow motorists that don't have the displacement to put up a real fight.

Doesn't someone have go by you fast for it to be a flyby? Did dude even know he was in a race? Maybe he was just late for work.
I think a few of us without your displacement could put up a fight.

not to be a douche, but sounds like another idiot driver, and I'm not talking about the guy in the sentra

Red Turbo Integra -> That's why I wrote down that I don't condone ricer flyby's, I see it happen and put my foot down to prevent it from happening. And I am sure a lot of you can. Like I wrote, I am stock and not at all fast. I've seen some fast 4 bangers around here, including integra's that look all stock, besides the telltale front mount inter cooler. It's only a matter of time before I run into one of those and get my *** handed to me. It's all in good fun.
2000AZ5.0GT-> Right, I think you already know the answer on your first question. Goodbye.
83gtragtop-> You rather do punch it on a street with side streets, inner city limits? A school zone perhaps? I am sure you are a real saint. To clarify, I seldom see triple digits when merging on the pretty much vacant highway. But it does happen from time to time, therefore I usually merge around 70, but sometimes...
