(I could be wrong..my old LT1 seemed to respond to mods rather well and was trapping just shy of 105mph on stock manifolds with minor bolt ons.)
I was just assuming, the thing sounded realllly good.

All it takes is a good muffler for an LT1 to sound very good.

I have heard plenty of LT1's with just mufflers, some guys around town also said the guy has headers, intake and some other stuff done. If it's the same guy, who knows. But it's a very small town.

Yes they do,I gained 30rwhp on my lt1 by adding LT's, catted o/r y and adjusting the tune.

All it takes is some LT's and true duals to make an LT1 sound good. lol. Anything else sounds like filth and rasp. Y-pipes with crossflow mufflers bite the big one. That's why I went with the x-pipe when I put my LT's on.

LT's or Mids make a pretty good difference. But, most people will usually say shorties suck. Mine had shorties on it when I bought it, so I don't know if they were any better than stock manifolds. But, going from shorties and a cutout, to LT's and true duals, was a night and day difference. Both in sound, and performance. I do know that you had some pretty good results with shorties though. But, maybe the BBK's were a lot better than Edelbrocks. Didn't you make 360rwhp through a stalled auto and shorties with a CC306, on stock heads?
