Default G8 GT...

Got to play with a G8 GT this morning... results were not exactly as expected.

I was headed down a two lane highway when I noticed a black car flying up on me. As I checked the rearview I noticed the hood and knew it was a G8... wasn't sure what model yet but I was able to tell shortly after.

Seconds after flying up the G8 jumped out and passed... as it rolled past I could hear the exhaust and saw the GT badge on the rear deck. Wasn't really sure what to expect from these as they have 360ish HP but are a bit heavier than I am. From highway speeds I figured it would be interesting so I followed close just to see what was going to happen. Soon enough a car slowed to turn off the highway and left me and the G8 all alone from a slow roll to feel each other out. I saw a quick puff of black and the rear slightly drop on the G8 and I quickly went WOT behind. We went from a casual 25mph to 80mph and by that time I had pulled right up on it's bumper and let off.. the G8 stayed in it a bit longer and put some distance between us before slowing down.

After the next small town the 2 lane jumps to a 4 lane highway and I was eagerly awaiting the event. I caught back up and hung close behind the G8 as we made our way to the split. We were sitting in a 45mph zone moving along and when the speed limit went up and lanes split sure enough I see another puff of black and a squat. I quickly dropped to 2nd and signaled for the left lane, after the previous squirmish I had an idea of what was going to happen next. By the top of 2nd I had pulled nearly even and with a nice solid bark into 3rd I started walking right on past pulling quickly ahead and putting some space (maybe a car length) between us before letting off again.

I know the GXP runs similar times (~109traps) and the GTs are not pulling near the same numbers but I was expecting a little more fight from that much power. It was definately fun... I tried to grab a quick video on the Iphone but it proved to be too tricky to coordinate that and shift.

I can't wait to get to the rentals next month and see how the car does... certainly feeling strong.

Good run man. I've been hearing that they are in bad need of a tune to run low 13s.

Not surprised, they are similar to the new 300C/Charger in performance.

Our local performance shop just got one of these. Bone stock it ran 13.5 @102. With a CAI and in house tune, it ran 13 flat @105, and picked up nearly 30 rwhp from these 2 mods alone.

Not too bad for a 3800 lb. 4 door family car!

And such is life with GM programming, it's pretty damn restrictive (mostly in the TM department...). I like the G8 GXPs, and honestly if it had been out a couple years earlier one of those would be in my driveway instead of the SRT8 (love my SRT8, but I love the heavy aftermarket for the LS motors better)

nice kill man. after some debate on another forum, i took one for a test drive and was unimpressed. of course i was using the *** brand accelerometer and it didn't seem to pull as hard as i had expected. without actually runing it for times and with the accelerometer out of calibration i can't really say for sure.

It's actually Lidio's personal ride.

I took one of thess G8 GTs on back in april (we were even.. back then my 02 GT was stock). Agreed on the lots of power but bad tune.. plus I think the automatic is kinda crappy. A manual would be lots of fun on the G8 GT... they probably didn't do it because it would be closer to the GXP.
