Default M&H drag radials.. disapointing results

Mods are in the sig, on stock tires I ran a best of 13.5@102mph DA of 4200 ft corrected down to a 12.8@108mph. 2.0 60ft

switched to M&H Drag Radials 275 on 17" stock rims.

1st run 2.43 60ft 14.198@100.67 DA of 5590 = 13.2@108mph
2nd run 2.27 60ft 14.07@99.94 DA of 5396 = 13.1@107
3rd run 2.34 60ft 14.150@99.75 DA of 5298 = 13.2@106

1st run I didn't do a very good burn out.. 2nd run was a bit better but didn't hold it for long, 3rd run i just drove through the water box, did a good burnout, but didn't roll it out prpoerly..

Place was packed.. funny cars + jet engine car and jr dragsters and big cash gambler ($2000) left little time for Time Only runs.. International Mustang Meet was there and club members got in for $25 instead of the $35 atleast..

I could have gotten one more run in but i was tired and annoyed.. a friend who goes a lot recommended I try leaving off idle.. another friend said it was because the tires are 1" taller..

Thoughts? opinions? I think i do need more practice burning out.. wish I could have gotten like 7 or 8 passes in and it was cooler.. it felt like i hooked really well on the 3rd run but apparently not.. although the guy saying i should leave off idle said sometimes cars act funny like he has a 4,000 stall in his but he leaves on 2,000 because it runs slower when he leaves any higher he hooks fine, it just doesn't run as fast.. I was launching at 2,000 rpm then dropped down to 1500 rpm for the last run. I was leaving off idle on my stock tires.

Try a better burnout. What's your tire pressure? I feel you on being frustrated. I can't get more than a couple of passes in when I go to the track. Doesn't give you a whole lot of time to practice which sucks. I'm still trying to find the sweet spot for my launch and tire pressure, although I know my DR are to small for my power level. I'll probably buy some different ones within the next month or so.

i took them down to 20psi.. someone recommended taking them to 17psi.. but i didn't want to drive them back (30 mile drive plus about a mile on really rough dirt road) that low.

I'd try 17PSI but I'd take them all the way down to 15. I wouldn't go any lower than 15 for safety reasons!!!! Get a real good second gear burnout and launch at 4 grand. Also buy yourself one of those cheap compresors that plug into your cigarette lighter and take it with you to the track. It'll make tire pressure changes a lot easier and you can air your tires back up before you leave the track. I included a link to a decent Drag radial write up from a few of the top tire brands engineers.

I've never actually raced but according to my dyno numbers. I should run 8s on street tires.

DA sure wasn't helping. But i dont think your spinning on 11.5" wide drag radial's as long as you smoke them just a bit.

What about the burnout is throwing you off? Dont need a smoke show, just spin them in second for about 3 seconds is all you should need. Thats what i do and im leaving at 4000-4500rpm and dumping the clutch on 9.5" wide MT et streets.

I was told with the M&Hs you need a long burnout.. i did a 1 sec burnout the first time, 3 sec the 2nd time and like 6 secs the 3rd time.. so maybe the 3 sec is the right number.. it seemed like it didnt peel out to bad the 2nd or 3rd time.. just felt like it had no power..

1st, air them down to 17 psi or so. 20 is two high. Then when you do your burn out let it get to around 50 mph and once you see white smoke let them roast for about 2-3 seconds. With my mt's i found they needed to be broken in a bit before they really started hooking.

Any new drag tire is going to need a few good, hard burnouts at first. There is a bunch of slick crap on new tires. On a 275/17 tire I have pulled low 1.5 60 foots. I ran them at 17 psi, this seemed to work best. On a wider tire, with a low profile like these, lower psi will cause the tire to cup. You will have to try different PSI's to find what works best for this tire on this car, but be careful going too low.

I leave my drag radials at the same pressure as they're driven around on (30 psi) and they hook fine like that.

You need to wear those tires down some, get that new film or whatever it is off of them, then they will hook right.
