Hmmmm......lets see if my old fart memory serves me right.....yep, a good friend of mine at that time had a normally aspirated 944 which I drove a number of times. An acquaintence of his, also in our profession, had the turbo version which I also drove.......so, yes, I am quite familiar with the way they perform. I am also familiar with the fact that a car that makes less than 250 ponies is pretty weight sensitive. Given the fact that I jumped a length and a half at 65, and given the fact that the kid in the middle was laughing and pointing at my Fox before I jumped I have a fairly good idea that they were racing. A roll race doesn't take a rocket scientist to do. Did they start in the wrong gear? It didn't sound like it, but, it's possible. That's the only thing that could have been wrong. I didn't gain any ground after the initial jump and indeed as the speed increased was losing ground.....as expected.
It was unexpected to me too at the time which is why the race still stands out for me after all these years. The 928 was quite funny because the asshat driving it was so pissed that a Mustang could keep up with him. I still firmly believe that the Fox was and still is under estimated. The performance of today is a long cry from what it was in the 80s. At the time the Fox was pretty darn impressive.
