As soon as he passed me with that ease I already knew it was a 335i before I saw the rear badge. I think in order for me to have no problems with douches in 335i's I need to have some FI going on.
Problem with that, and any mods for that matter, is that I have vowed to keep my car stock. This stuff rarely happens anyway, but it's still crappy if you can't keep someone like that behind you.
Money is a factor too. If FI was 4 grand as opposed to the 7-8 grand installed I would have most likely done it already. But I would have kept the exterior and exhaust stock. I like the sleeper thing.
And as of last Friday I became a homeowner. Money is now really hard to come by given my wife's and my retail styled income. If I worked full-time I would have no problems, but sometimes I barely hit 20 hours a week. Ouch...
Maybe I could ask for a Whipple for Christmas... I'll foot the grand (or so) for the install myself. ~_^
@mac10chap -> That would be Plano, TX

if you can front 1k to have a whipple installed then you can have a car that will chew up 335i's...... CAI+ tuner $500-$600 and you have $ let over for other mods as well maybe some AB's...... you'll be surprised how much the car wakes up just from that.....

Like I would get it for Christmas anyway... Hahaha! I did send my dad-in-law an e-mail joking about it. Like hell he would be that "generous" after helping us get into the house we are able to start fixing up coming tuesday.
I think if I do something, I want to do it right anyway. So FI is the only thing I would consider if I ever mod it. But a low pressure supercharger though, I want more power, but I want it to last too!
Listen to what others have told you already. You dont need FI to keep up with or beat 335i's. Intake and tune will net you 20-25whp, and should let you keep up with one. Get some 4.10's, an o/r midpipe and a catback and you will have more than enough car to keep you happy for awhile.
Inherent problems with 4.10's is horrible highway rpm's. I like my 3.55's But even when I am doing 70mph with those I have the urge to shift higher than 5. With 4.10's it would become unbearable for me. Great acceleration, but crap economy at speed. I am what you call a highway flyer I guess.
Besides, as stated before, if I want to do it, I am going all out with a supercharger. The 6psi whipple (or any other low boost kit) nets around 400whp & equivalent torque. More than enough for that platform, and more than enough to dust any (stock) 335i, even if you get on it a little late. Besides, I think 400whp is safer compared to the HO kits out there. 400whp must be around 450 at the block, increase of 50% over stock. It was my understanding to keep things safe engine wise one would stop at that mark. Go beyond 50% increase and you should go forged.
I went from 3.55s to 4.10s too. RPMs definitely go up around 400 at 70 mph or so, but its not as bad on your MPG unless you like to cruise 80 mph. Seems like once I break that 70 mph mark, my gas starts going quick. I'm averaging about 21 mpg all around. With that said, if you're not dead set and positive about 4.10s, I'd advise anyone not to do it. Its a mod you gotta really want and be willing to accept the drawbacks to enjoy.
