Default First time at the track...I've got a lot to learn!

Well, I went to the track for the first time today. I was hoping to get into the 13s, but I couldn't seem to get traction. So here are some videos of my runs, if anyone has any tips or tricks I'm all ears. One thing to mention, I didn't do a very large burn out because these are my street tires that I have to use for everyday driving. When I get a set of wheels/tires for track use only, I'll do a better one.

Mods are in my sig. I'm pretty sure if I eliminate some driver error I should reach my goal (13s). What have some of you folks with bolt ons run?

My first run (no video on this one, I forgot to turn the camera on) was a 14.450

R/T .734
60' 2.218
330 6.137
1/8 9.342
MPH 74.95
1000 12.134
1/4 14.450
MPH 97.87

So my reaction time sucked lol.

My second run was a 14.324. I did red light this run though

R/T -.126
60' 2.132
330 6.101
1/8 9.290
MPH 76.65
1000 12.033
1/4 14.324
MPH 98.91

My third run was a 15.576. So I spun like crazy when I launched and tried shifting to second but it didn't work out so great.

R/T .083
60' 2.738
330 7.188
1/8 10.480
MPH 75.67
1000 13.266
1/4 15.576
MPH 98.17

My last run was a 14.135 and again was a lot of wheel spin.

R/T .071
60' 2.219
330 6.059
1/8 9.178
MPH 78.01
1000 11.869
1/4 14.135
MPH 99.66

Again, any advice would be appreciated. The next mod I get for my car will be a set of wheels/tires that I use for the track. Hopefully I'll be able to hook up a little better. Once you start to spin, do you just stay in it or let off and get back on it?

My advice if you just want to see what the car can do? Ignore the tree and the green light. Take your time to do a proper launch and forget your reaction time. Focus on getting a 60' time of under 2 seconds. Worry about reaction time until you have more experience. Most of all, have fun!

I'm pretty new to the track as well, this year was my first season taking a car to the track and from everyone i've talked to at the track that I know or met have said Reaction time is useless unless your bracket racing or you and a buddy are comparing to trash talk each other so I agree with Slappy ignore the tree as reaction time has nothing to do with your time don't even worry about it for now..

Focus on getting your 60' in the 2.0x or better. What RPM are you launching at and are you dumping the clutch or slipping the clutch?

My '13 with the crappy Pirelli Tires I was averaging around 2.2-2.3 60' then I installed the MSD 2step and now I'm averaging 2.03-2.08 60' so that helped me alot, seems I was a failure at trying to do 2 things at once... hold my RPMs at launch and slip clutch lol

Track specific wheels and tires will help tremendously. I'd also recommend control arms like these:

And shocks like these:

My honest assessment though, is that if you make 30 more passes in that car (spread out over multiple test n tune sessions) you'll run 13s with no extra mods, just the extra experience.

Noted. I was pretty focused on the tree. I think I'm going to the 1/8 mile track this week so I'll work on that.

Don't get me wrong, even though I wasn't as fast as I wanted to be, I had a blast! It was a lot of fun running on the track and there were a ton of cool cars so it was basically a car show too.

The first time I launched around 2500, the second time was just over 3000 and the last was around 2000. I tried to slip it the last run, but I got caught up in the moment and dumped it lol. So can you kind of describe a proper launch?

I have plans to do some suspension (UC, LC, panhard bar, shocks, struts, springs) work so I'll keep these in mind. I was considering this package from strano parts:
http://www.stranoparts.com/partdetai...=143&ModelID=5

How would that compare to UPR shocks?

I'm also planning on supercharging the car hopefully around Jan or Feb next year. So that is why I'm trying to hone my skills a little so I can handle the extra power.

You should be trapping way more, how heavy are your aftermarket wheels? Get a set of lighter wheels, throw some drag radials on them and get back out there.

Bradenton speedway?

I got the godspeed wheels because they are supposed to be lighter than factory wheels. I'm not sure if thats true, but I am looking at a set of track wheels as stated earlier. A coworker has a set of 18x9.5 rims he took of his mustang I can have so I may take him up on that and get a nice set of tires. Any suggestions? They have to be street legal enough to get me to the track.

Yeah, it was Bradenton speedway.

What all mods do you have done? I had an 09 GT for awhile with an intake, tune, 4.10s, and UDPs. Average times were 13.0-13.2 at 107-108 mph on a 2.0-2.1 60'.

What RPM are you shifting at? Focus on slipping the clutch, don't be afraid to bring the RPM on up..once you learn to feel the clutch engagement you can launch at 3500 or 5k rpm, it won't make any difference as long as you learn the feel and when to get completely off the clutch pedal. Basically once it transfers the weight (rear end squats) you can go ahead and let it go. Just takes practice like UPR stated. Keep at it man!

5k launch on street tires in my 09..

I know it sounds dumb and I've said it before, but I imagine a good street tire launch like trying to slip the clutch on a steep grade.

You want to be swift with the clutch so that you don't roll backwards hypothetically, but you also don't want to dump it so that you're frying your tires off and ruining your run before you're through the 60' mark.

As the other member in here mentioned, you'll feel the car bite and by then you should be all throttle no clutch.

I took the same care from 14.5 to 13.6 with nothing more than tires and seat time. EDIT: when I say same car, I mean my '99GT..not a GT like yorus.

Practice Practice Practice is going to be your best modification. If you dont want to keep going to the track just to do this then go find an old country road and try a bunch of different things to get it to launch easier. Dont need to do full runs just wind out 1st gear. then figure out what works best and start there at the track. the track will be different then roads but you'll get an idea of where to start. I'd try and hold the revs around 3500 and quickly but smoothly let the clutch out and try and be full throttle with the clutch all the way out within a second.

Oh and stone, that vid of your old car, Looks pretty good. You should find a mustang to park in your now empty garage space :'(
