Default 2012 V6 VS. Focus ST

Coming home from work this morning. I'm Just trying to get home as fast as possible on my hour long commute and doing the usual 75-80 on the highway. I come up on a late model black focus and pass it, not paying any attention to it. Well it gets my attention by speeding up and passing me back on the right. I finally notice the ST badge and the wing. So I hit the throttle and take it up to about 90 and pass again. Again the Focus overtakes on the right again and pulls even. Well now i'm annoyed and nail the throttle and take off. The Focus driver must have been waiting for that because a millisecond after I hit the throttle He does also. I'm out a half car and to my surprise I'm not pulling at all? We rode it out all the way to 130 before I let out. I might have gained a foot on the focus from 80 to 130. Pretty impressive I'm thinking to myself. My Mustang has run a best of 13.8@102 so I'm assuming the little turbo car had a few minor mods.....Turbo cars always pull hard up top. I kind of miss that feeling.

They do? I was always under the impression that turbo'd cars petered out hard near the top of the gear because they have to blow off the excess pressure so they don't pop the motor?

That's evident in most dyno's where there is a strong drop off the TQ and HP curves above 5600 RPM vs their redline of over 6,000 to 6,500...

That's not just this dyno or this car but almost any single turbo has a comparable mid-RPM range hump.

I haven't figured out what RPM each gear would run in though so I guess it's possible to keep a turbo car near it's peaks in the 100mph+ range.. Just thinking out loud here.

Yea once your out of boost your out of boost. I would shift my SRT-4 at 5800rpms. But if you keep the car in its boost sweet spot they absolutely scream. I believe the Focus has a 6 speed tranny (could be wrong) so staying in boost shouldn't be an issue.

I'm not totally surprised he held with you from a roll like that. He may have been tuned, or he may of been stock and a tuned one should pull harder than that. I do know they pick up a lot from just a tune. Only put down 250 RWHP, but with 350-360 RWTQ. Little stump pullers.

They are 6-speeds.

There is a lot of weird little cars I'd daily commute in. The ST would probably make that list.

That's bring the hot hatch segment back to life. That segment kind of died out when the SRT-4 and the Cobalt SS went belly up.
