Default Coilovers Vs. Shocks/Stut + springs?

There is a lot of good info on this forum. That being said I know I would get some accurate and unbiased information by asking here. Being a club racer in motorcycling I know the importance of proper suspension, the rear shock on a motorcycle is essentially a coilover design. I was just curious as to the benefit of going coilover vs springs and shocks in an automobile application. Is the advantage just a greater range of tuning?

I have a stock 12' premium GT with track package and I'm looking for a dialed suspension for a DD and occasional track day. Thanks for the replies in advance.
