Another option is to use a come along that goes around the axel to your cross memeber and you can ratchet the rear end forward. It is kind of a Pain the A$$ to do by your self otherwise.
+1 here, a come-along works well, just don't damage your brake lines.
The problem is that you are articulating the remaining 3 axle attaching points. So there will be a bind and the axle will want to move to relieve the bind. Then it is really tough to get it back into position. The come-along achieves this rather easily.
