tire width...

I have 275/40/17's on my z28 and on my cobra. yet, the z28 tire is roughly 3 inches wider than on the cobra.... cobra is sporting 17 x 9's and the z28 has 17 x 9.5's... would the rim make THAT much of a difference? what's the deal here? the tires are different brands, but it's the same size... on a side note, what's the best tire size to run on the stock rim? can anything bigger fit?

Man you are confused? Z28 and a Cobra? LOL where are you measuring from? I know that some tires have a bigger contact patch than others but 3 inches is a pretty big difference. Offset on these two wheels very different as well. are you measuring the tire from edge to edge? I think 275 would be the widest I would go on a 17inch rim. Maybe 285, but I think on a 17x9 if you go wider you start to get that balloon tire look. Just my thought. I have seen 315 on a 17 inch but the rim is like 10 or 10.5.
