96-98 Cobra vs. 03-04 Mach 1

I say go for the 96-98 Cobra, but I'm biased. They're cheap because they're so old but they're also reliable for daily driver use. Buy the cobra and stick the money you save in your children's college fund. Then if they don't go to college, you can restore the car later. lol.

Mach1's with a Manual trans have a 8 bolt forged crank.
Mach1's with an Auto trans have the 6 bolt cast crank. The cast crank is lighter than the forged.
The manual got the forged peice because of the vibrations and harsh conditions put onto it from a 5spd and the strong change that it would be driven like it should, HARD!
The Mach 1 also has 3.55 gears in the rear while the 96-98 Cobra have 3.27 gears (Correct me if I am wrong, but I am sure its 3.27.)
The Mach1 and Bullit both share the same suspension and swaybars. They also share many other key features such as exhaust tips, quarter windows, interior accents.
The PBR brakes on the Mach1 are suppose to be superiour to anything before 99'
The Mach1 heads are the same as the 03/04 Cobra heads and outflow the 96-98 B heads and provide a more broad power range.
The TR3650 is stronger than the T45 in the Cobra (365ftlb VS 325ftlbs of the T45.) The TR3650 can make some wierd noises though, noises you would think that there was something wrong.
All 99+ mustangs also have a wider wheelbase, 1/4" per side I believe adding more traction and handling.
I personally feel that Mach 1's will hold their value better in the long run anyways. Limited production will make these a sound investment (If you could ever pry the keys out of your cold dead hands!) LOL Not me!
Oh ya, the Mach 1ECM is the fastest of any Mustang ECM, EEC-IV or EEC-V making for great reaction to engine variations.

RE: 96-98 Cobra vs. 03-04 Mach 1
and nobody has mentioned yet the Mach 1 has the 5.4 navi cams, which are better also.
If money is the issue - then get a Mach 1.. it out performs all N/A mustangs in every shape way or form... including the S197 3V.
The gears, the suspension, motor parts, and the transmissionare better.
they can be had a bit cheaper too... I got mine with 27k miles bone stock for about 15k, from a dealership.
But if you don't wanna spend the money - definatly look at the 96-98 Cobras.. the 99-01 Cobras aren't much cheaper then the mach... and even the 98 Cobras are goin for 8-12k..
